MLKTA offers the following courses in core subject of ELA:

  • ELA 7

  • ELA 8

  • ELA 8 Honors (requires application and demonstrated skills)

  • ELA 7 Essentials (requires IEP)

  • ELA 8 Essentials (requires IEP)

All ELA courses are designed to teach the California Common Core Standards and meet the requirements for the annual SBAC ELA assessment.  The adopted curriculum is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt California Collections for Grade 7 and 8.

Middle school assignments focus on Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking and provide exposure to Literature and Informational Texts. Instructional activities overlap with the research and writing skills needed in the History and Science courses.

Students are given quarterly benchmarks to measure content mastery and progress towards the end of year expectations.  The iReady Reading Intervention program is used by all students and weekly assignments are based on Diagnostic scores.  Intervention activities are incorporated into student grades.
