Students are expected to attend school regularly and on time.
  • It is the parents’/guardians’ responsibility that students attend school and classes on time every day.
  • School district policy and state law require daily school attendance for students between the ages of 6 and 18.
 
Students shall be classified as truant if they are absent from school without a valid excuse for three full days in one school year or tardy for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combinations thereof.
  • Such students and their parents are subject to a SART meeting to create attendance intervention strategies aimed at improving student attendance.
  • Students who violate attendance contracts created at SART meetings are subject to SARB hearings, which may result in school removal or referral to Truancy Court.

Early Dismissals require an ID of an adult listed on the emergency card for every dismissal.  
  • Students will not be dismissed without an adult present.  
  • There will be no exceptions.

If a student is absent, he/she must bring a note from home and take it to the attendance office.
 
Parents may also call or email the Attendance Office to excuse student absences.
Absences must be cleared within 5 days in order to be considered excused.
  • The student needs to come to school 10 -15 minutes early when returning from an absence to make sure that there is time to wait in line for clearing of the absence.
  • Students who are late to class returning from clearing an absence at the attendance office are considered tardy and subject to discipline (see tardy policy above).

A student is considered tardy if he/she is not in their classroom when the tardy bell begins to ring.  
 
Tardies will be handled by the school office.
  • Consequences (e.g. classroom clean-up, lunch/afterschool detention, etc.) may be assigned, and parents will be contacted.
  • Students with excessive tardies may be restricted from participating in out-of-the-classroom activities such as after-school sports, dances and school-wide rallies.

California Education Code

The legislature of the State of California has established that it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child/children attend school.  Further, it has authorized penalties which may be assessed against the parent for failure to do so. 

Failure to attend will mean that the school authorities will refer the parents and students to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB), and if necessary, to the District Attorney’s office.    

Excused Absences
A student‘s absence shall be excused for the following reasons:
  • Personal illness
  • Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer
  • Medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic appointments
  • Attendance at funeral service for a member of the immediate family

    • Excused absence in this instance shall be limited to one day if the service is conducted in California or three days if the service is conducted out of state.
    • "Immediate family” shall be defined as mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister or any relative living in the student’s immediate household.
 
Truancy
  • Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasionsin one school year, or any combination thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.
 
Student Attendance Review Board (SARB)
  • A referral for a SARB Hearing may result from habitual truancy, irregular attendance, habitual insubordination or disorderly conduct at school. 
  • SARB may direct alternative education placement, a contractual agreement or other resource interventions deemed necessary by the panel members. 
  • SARB hearings may involve the District Attorney, Probation Department, Twin River Police Department or other law enforcement agency, Department of Human Assistance Investigation, School Nurses or Department of Human Assistance Social Services.
  • If a pupil violates the recommendations of the SARB panel, sanctions such as educational setting changes, reduction of county aid, postponement of driving privileges and/or other legal actions may be enforced.  
  • The juvenile court may require a drivers’ license held by the minor to be surrendered to the court.  If the minor does not yet have the privilege to drive the court may postpone the time the pupil becomes eligible to drive up to one year.
